Today’s Market Action – 10/13/2025

Today At A Glance:

U.S. stocks snapped back from Friday’s slump after President Trump softened his tone on China, stoking hopes that tariff tensions may cool. The S&P 500 posted its best day since May, the Dow climbed more than 580 points, and the Nasdaq led with a gain of ~2.2%. Tech outperformed as AI momentum returned—headlined by a big jump in Broadcom after a custom-chip pact with OpenAI. With the bond market closed for the holiday, equity trade did the talking as breadth improved across most sectors. Even so, strategists noted valuations (especially in AI) remain stretched, making upcoming earnings a key test.

Gainers Of Note:

  • Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) – Diversified semiconductor & networking; surged after announcing a multiyear partnership to build custom AI processors for OpenAI, reinforcing its role as a non-Nvidia play in the AI stack.
  • Estée Lauder (NYSE: EL) – Global beauty company; jumped after a Goldman Sachs upgrade highlighted improving prospects as travel retail stabilizes.
  • Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) – Enterprise software & cloud; rose on continued AI-cloud enthusiasm and follow-through buying after recent positive updates.

Losers Of Note:

  • Fastenal (NASDAQ: FAST) – Industrial distributor; fell after a modest EPS miss and cautious commentary on industrial activity/margins in its Q3 report.
  • Scholar Rock (NASDAQ: SRRK) – Biotech; slid after disclosure of FDA observations (Form 483/OAI status) tied to a third-party Catalent facility used in its manufacturing chain.
  • Protagonist Therapeutics (NASDAQ: PTGX) – Biotech; eased on chatter that a potential Johnson & Johnson bid could price below where shares recently traded.

Active Traders Of Note:

  • Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) – Consumer tech; heavy volume as megacap tech rode the relief rally and investors rotated back into AI-adjacent bellwethers.
  • Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) – AI semis; active with strong interest as chip names rallied in sympathy with Broadcom’s OpenAI deal headlines.
  • Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) – EVs & energy; active as risk appetite returned to growth and traders repositioned after last week’s volatility.

Looking Forward:

Relief from trade rhetoric pushed indexes higher, but durability now hinges on early earnings—especially banks and mega-cap tech—to justify premium multiples. Any renewed tariff escalation or guidance cuts could quickly re-ignite volatility. Expect AI-exposed semis and cloud names to remain leadership (and headline-sensitive) into tomorrow’s session.
