Today’s Market Action – 10/6/2025

Today At A Glance:

AI euphoria carried stocks to more records as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at fresh highs, while the Dow slipped slightly. The spark was AMD’s blockbuster multi-year chip-supply deal with OpenAI, which rocketed AMD shares and lifted the broader semi complex. Telecom weighed on the Dow after Verizon slid on a surprise CEO change. Despite the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, risk appetite held up and leadership stayed squarely in AI-linked names. Traders also digested regional-bank M&A headlines (Fifth Third to buy Comerica), which sent CMA sharply higher.

Looking Forward:

Momentum rests on AI infrastructure spending and whether today’s chip-led surge broadens beyond mega-cap tech. With the shutdown still in effect, attention turns to potential delays in economic prints and to early Q3 earnings pre-announcements for the next catalyst. Watch for follow-through in semis and any rotation into cyclicals as traders gauge how durable the AMD-OpenAI halo effect will be.
